Is W3C compliance necessary for optimal search engine positioning?. Yes, it is. Search engines are user focused. They will definitely place W3C and ADA compliant websites higher on the search engines's results pages all other things being equal. W3C and ADA compliant websites are user oriented and accessible for all, so it makes sense that websites that make their content available to everyone would receive higher rankings.
